DETROIT – Chronic wasting disease turns deer into so-called "zombies", and experts fear that it will spill into the human population one day.

The disease spread to 24 states, including Michigan. The target area in Michigan is made up of 16 counties located in the center and west of the state. There were 60 confirmed cases.

No cases have been reported in humans, but many experts believe that it is just a matter of time before this happens. They compare the disease to the mad cow epidemic of the late 1980s in Britain.

To help fight the spread of the disease, it is no longer allowed to call nor feed the deer in the lower reaches of the Michigan Peninsula.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that hunters test deer before eating meat in affected areas.

If a deer looks sick or acts abnormally, hunters should not shoot, handle or eat meat, experts said.
