The Michigan Freedom Trail Commission’s fourth annual Underground Railroad Heritage Gathering begins with weekly virtual presentations in September and ends with a one-day event at the University of Michigan on October 2.
September virtual programs
To commemorate International Underground Railroad Month, four Thursday night programs will explore the rescue of four enslaved people in Michigan in 1847. The programs, which run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., are free and will run via Zoom. Pre-registration is mandatory and each presentation has its own registration link.
September 9 – Introduction and background to the Michigan slave rescues in 1847
September 16 – The Crosswhite and Robert Cromwell cases
September 23 – Kentucky Raid and John Felix White
September 30 – The impact of the Michigan Slave Rescues of 1847 and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
Annual heritage gathering
The annual one-day conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 2 at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.
As in previous years, the day aims to network, share information and develop next steps for a statewide collaboration with the Underground Railroad. Join us and be part of the conversation! Registration for the day is $ 12 and includes a lunch box.

Organizers are monitoring current developments with the COVID-19 pandemic and are exploring options to make virtual sessions possible in addition to or instead of an in-person event. More information will be available soon.
