The Livingston County congresswoman said the sea of secular signs welcoming President Joe Biden to Howell on Tuesday afternoon was “embarrassing.”
President Joe Biden spoke at Operating Engineers Local 324 training center. Before and during the event, hundreds of protesters gathered around M-59 and Michigan Avenue carrying dozens of “F *** Biden” flags and signs stating “China Joe Must Go!” And “Biden is a traitor”.
Officially, the crowd was gathered for a “Stop the Spending Rally” organized by the Livingston County Republican Party. The rally featured Meghan Reckling, president of the local GOP, and Meshawn Maddock, co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party.
In a article on Mlive.com8th District Democrat Elissa Slotkin said she was “embarrassed” by the secular message and the president pointed to the signs as she walked through the rally – noting that they were also next to a school. This school is Howell’s Voyager Elementary. Slotkin told MLive “I pointed out the school to him and, he said” I guess I’m always surprised when people, even if they don’t like me, are willing to be so profane with children. The MP added: “It’s just a sad moment when someone can stand blocks from a school with a sign using this kind of profanity.”
A video posted on TikTok shows the president’s motorcade crossing the intersection as protesters stand on the side of the roadway and are then asked by police to clear the street. A young boy featured in the video is heard asking where President Biden will get out of his vehicle “so I can shoot him.” The video is believed to have been reported to law enforcement authorities.
A request for comment on the nature of the rally, including name calling and threats of violence, was sent to Reckling but was not returned.
