Anthoine Hubert, a Formula 2 driver, died at the age of 22 after being injured in an accident during the race for selection at Spa-Francorchamps.
The junior Renault – defending champion of the GP3 Series – was trying to climb into the top 10 with his car prepared by Arden when he was caught in an accident with Giuliano Alesi, who lost control of his car to Water Red.
Hubert was then hit at high speed by Sauber Junior Team rider Juan Manuel Correa at the exit of the Raidillon corner.
The FIA confirmed that Hubert had succumbed to his injuries at 6:35 pm local time, more than an hour after the accident.
Correa was taken to the hospital and is described in the FIA statement as being in a stable state. Alesi was released from the medical center.
Hubert has won two Formula 2 races this season – Monaco and Paul Ricard – and finished eighth in the championship as the second rookie in the series.
Because of his good performance, he was well placed to be part of the best F2 next year and was well thought out in the Renault Formula 1 team.
Son of a French national rally driver, François, Hubert won the F4 French Championship in his first season in motor racing in 2013.
After two seasons with Tech 1 in Formula Renault, he played in a single European Formula 3 season with Van Amersfoort in 2016 before two GP3 seasons with ART Grand Prix.
The second in 2018 earned him the title of driver and allowed ART to win a seventh of eight team titles before the series merged with the European F3 to become the FIA Formula 3 in 2019.
His strong performance in GP3 earned him to be fully supported by 2019, which also helped to place him in Arden for the season. With a new merger with HWA, the Arden team has improved tremendously over the course of the year.

Statement by the FIA
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) regrets to announce that a serious incident involving cars # 12, # 19 and # 20 occurred at 5:07 pm on 31/08/19 as part of the FIA Formula 2 sprint race at Spa – Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.
The emergency and medical teams immediately attended the scene and all drivers were taken to the medical center.
Following this incident, the FIA regrets to announce that the driver of car 19, Antoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries and died at 6:35 pm.
The driver of car 12, Juan-Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable state and is treated at the Hospital of Liège University Hospital. More information on his condition will be provided as soon as they are available.
The driver of car no. 20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical center.
The FIA supports the organizers of the event and the relevant authorities and has opened an investigation into the incident.
