Hurricane Dorian could land in Florida late Monday or Tuesday. In preparation, the city of Miami ordered electric scooters to leave the streets Friday noon local time. This movement is designed to prevent scooters from becoming projectiles at high speeds when the wind begins to rise.
Miami officials held a briefing on Wednesday to inform residents of Preparing for Hurricane Dorian, according to the Miami Herald. City Commissioner Ken Russell tweeted On Thursday, companies must remove scooters from the streets by mid-Friday before wind speeds rise on Saturday. He reinforced his point of view with #scooternado.
Six scooter companies work in Miami: Bird, Bolt, Lime, Lyft, Spin and Uber Jump.
Lime has removed his scooters and bikes from Orlando, Miami and Fort Lauderdale and reduced the number of his vehicles in Tampa, the company said. Lyft said it would remove and secure all of its 244 scooters by Friday noon. Uber said the Jump scooters will be removed by Friday noon and that they will monitor other Florida cities where Jump is available. Spin said that he would recover his scooters and not deploy them in bad weather.
Bird and Bolt did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
