Social media giant Facebook says it is cracking down on misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine and will remove “false claims” posted on Facebook or Instagram that have been debunked by public health experts.

In a post on a company’s blog on Thursday, Facebook said it would tackle misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines as the world braces for the deployment of a number of vaccines against the disease.

Facebook’s previous policy was only to suppress claims about Covid-19 which it believes could lead to “Imminent physical damage.”

On Thursday, he said the new move was an extension of his commitment to “Remove misinformation about the virus that could lead to imminent physical damage.” This could include false claims about the safety, effectiveness, ingredients, or side effects of vaccines. “

For example, we will remove false claims that COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips or anything else that is not on the official vaccine ingredient list.

Facebook added that it would “Remove the COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy theories that we know today are false” like claiming that “Specific populations are used without their consent to test the safety of the vaccine.”

In November, the company reported that it had deleted 12 million false information about Covid-19 in seven months, in accordance with its internal guidelines.

Many deleted posts were already linked to bogus cures and conspiracy theories, such as the one linking the pandemic to 5G networks, according to Facebook.

On Monday, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he would look for other ways to help respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are already planning to disseminate authoritative information on vaccines”, Zuckerberg noted, but he did not elaborate.

The social media company’s announcement comes a day after the UK became the first country to approve a vaccine for deployment, with the first vaccines due to be administered next week.
