Facebook executive says company will make itself “more transparent”

Following Tuesday’s explosive whistleblower hearing, Facebook will implement new tools to increase transparency and user safety, Facebook vice president of global affairs Nick Clegg said on Sunday.

“We will, of course, be looking to make ourselves more and more transparent so that people can hold us to account,” Clegg told ABC “This Week” presenter George Stephanopoulos.

Facebook whistleblower and former employee Frances Haugen testified before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday, accusing the social media giant of ignoring evidence that its content is harmful to young users and dangerous to democracy.

“I have seen Facebook repeatedly encounter conflicts between its own benefits and our security. Facebook has consistently resolved these conflicts for its own benefit, ”Haugen told senators. “The result has been more division, more evil, more lies, more threats and more fighting.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied Haugen’s claims in a statement following the explosive hearing. “At the most basic level, I think most of us just don’t recognize the false corporate image that is painted,” Zuckerberg said.
