Facebook announced Monday that all employees will be required to wear masks when offices reopen. The policy is effective August 3 and will remain in effect until further notice. The company confirmed last week that it required COVID-19 vaccinations for all employees returning to work on its U.S. campuses, which it plans to fully reopen by October.

“Given the growing number of COVID cases, the most recent data on COVID variants, and a growing number of local requirements, we are reinstating our mask requirement at all Facebook offices in the United States, which regardless of an employee’s immunization status, ”a Facebook spokesperson said.

The Facebook update came the same day Bay Area health officials announced the reinstatement of indoor masking requirements in several counties. The order comes amid an increase in COVID-19 cases across the country, driven by the highly contagious Delta variant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their guidelines last week to recommend masking for people vaccinated in areas with high COVID-19 rates.

Other companies are also changing their plans and policies based on the number of cases, CDC recommendations, and local guidelines. Google postponed plans to reopen last week and said it would require vaccinations for all office workers. Apple requires masks for all customers and staff, vaccinated or not, at most of its retail stores in the United States.
