35 years ago today, on August 6, 1986, the first Metroid was released for the Famicom in Japan. The game would eventually hit the NES in North America and Europe in 1987 and 1988 respectively, before becoming a fan-beloved series to this day.

Metroid games don’t always come too often (aside from the crowded Metroid Prime era of the early 2000s), but it’s definitely a great time to be a fan of the series in 2021. With the main series of games from the franchise finally processed to a fifth installment in just a few months with Metroid Dread, as well as Metroid Prime 4’s promise to, well … a moment in the future, we’re happy to see Samus doing so well 35 years later.

And the fans are too. Social media has been inundated with posts celebrating the series, including a variety of fan-made artwork that we thought we’d share with you below.

Are you a fan of the Metroid series? Are you going to dust off an old game for a cheeky birthday rerun today? Please feel free to share your favorite Metroid memories with us in the comments below.
