MIAMI GARDENS, Fla – The Miami Dolphins have no plans to trade Xavien Howard despite the All-Pro cornerback’s desire to play elsewhere.
“We don’t want to trade X,” coach Brian Flores said on Friday. “Note that. He is a very good player. He is an integral part of the team.”
The double Pro Bowler is unhappy with his contract. Discussions with Howard and his agent are ongoing.
“As long as the lines of communication are open, as long as everyone is willing to compromise, then we can do something,” said Flores.
Howard requested an exchange via Instagram on July 27, the day the Dolphins showed up for training camp. He signed a five-year extension in May 2019 and is signed until 2024.
“I think we are moving in the right direction, and we will continue to talk,” said Flores. “We want these things to happen quickly. We want them to happen now. But some things take time, and we’ll work on it and hopefully come up with the best resolution for all parties.”
Flores declined to comment on whether the Dolphins have responded to commercial calls regarding Howard, who led the NFL with 10 interceptions last year. He was sidelined in recent training with an ankle injury, but took a tour on Friday.
Howard became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL when he signed his $ 75.1 million extension, but has since fallen to sixth place. He pointed out in his Instagram post that he was no longer the highest-paid cornerback on his own team, having been passed by Byron Jones, who signed a five-year, $ 82.5 million contract as as an unrestricted free agent before the 2020 offseason.
