Dr Anthony Fauci said on Thursday the pace of COVID-19 vaccinations was accelerating – and that by April, it would be the “open season” for virtually everyone to receive the vaccine.
Fauci, who is the scientific adviser to President Joe Biden, told NBC “Today” that the vaccination rate will accelerate dramatically over the next two months.
He credits the upcoming deliveries of the two approved vaccines, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, the potential approval of a third, and steps taken by the Biden administration to increase the country’s capacity to deliver doses.
The leading US infectious disease expert said that “by April” will be “the open season, meaning virtually anyone and anyone in any category could start getting the vaccine.”
He warned, however, that it would take “several more months” to deliver vaccines to adult Americans, but predicted that herd immunity could be achieved by the end of the summer.
