Dr Anthony Fauci was criticized on Sunday for suggesting that Americans may have to spend Christmas alone in 2021.
On CBS’s “Face The Nation,” Fauci spoke with presenter Margaret Brennan about the state of the coronavirus pandemic and what is expected in the coming months. Specifically, Brennan wondered if families could get together for Christmas.
“Can we get together for Christmas, or is it just too early to tell?” Brennan asked.
Fauci replied that it was “too early to say” if people could come together in groups by Christmas this year.

“It’s just too early to tell,” Fauci said. “We need to focus on continuing to reduce those numbers and not try to move forward weeks or months saying what we’re going to do at some point.”
Critics criticized Fauci for suggesting that families should spend Christmas separately.
“Dr Fauci said today that it was too early to know if people will be able to get together for Christmas. Insanity. Who in the world is listening to this guy again?” OutKick founder Clay Travis wrote.
The Spectator’s collaborating editor Stephen Miller tweeted: “Has Fauci weighed on the no-mask indoor awards show at all?” If not, why not?
“It’s bad enough that Fauci is saying these ridiculous things, but it’s worse that reporters keep asking him questions like he has a say in whether we get together for Christmas,” wrote Chuck Ross, Washington Free Beacon reporter.
Some Republican lawmakers have also criticized Fauci, such as New York Rep. Claudia Tenney, who said Americans are going to celebrate Christmas, regardless of what Fauci or President Biden say.
Dr Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made several predictions about when things might get back to normal. In December 2020, he had already faced backlash for suggesting that Christmas could not be “business as usual” but predicted that the holidays should be normal by 2021.
“It is highly likely that with the distribution of vaccines we will be back to normal by next Christmas,” Fauci said last year.

Fauci also used his appearance on “Face The Nation” to emphasize the need to get people vaccinated and receive boosters when needed.
“Let’s focus like a laser on continuing to reduce these cases. We can do that by getting people vaccinated. Also, in a situation where boosters are appropriate, to get people vaccinated because we know that they could go a long way in decreasing infection and decreasing advanced disease, the kind of data that now accumulates in real time, ”he said.
