Indians end with 6-0 victory in Texas

ARLINGTON, TX (AP) – Aaron Civale allowed just three singles while throwing six scoreless innings, Yu Chang scored and the Cleveland Indians closed their 107th and final season under that name with a 6-0 win over the 102 losses of the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

The Indians (80-82), who will become the Guardians by next season, ended their first losing season since 2012. That ended an eight-game winning streak, corresponding to the longest in the franchise history which was one of the American League charter teams in 1901 and became the Indians in 1915.

Four relievers, including right-hander Bryan Shaw, followed Civale (12-5) to end Cleveland’s ninth shutout this season. Shaw struck out the lone hitter he faced in his 81st game – appearing in exactly half of games this season – and extended his franchise record to 459 career appearances in relief.

Rangers rookie right-hander Dane Dunning (5-10) allowed four runs and five hits in three innings. He struck out three strikes, walked one, hit one, and threw a wild pitch that resulted in a run.

The Rangers were excluded for the 15th time and finished with their most defeat since 105 in 1973, the franchise’s second season in Texas after leaving Washington. It was their fifth consecutive losing season.

The Indians wore their dark road jerseys with Cleveland across the front, and no reference to the name the team announced earlier this year it was changing following a nationwide calculation on names and symbols racist.

Cleveland will take the field in 2022 under the new name selected from more than 1,000 applications submitted during the name change process. The Guardians’ new logo and uniforms were unveiled with mixed reviews in July.

Civale pulled out four and walked one on his 82 shots after going 1-3 in five starts in September. The right-hander dominated majors with his 10-2 record before spraining a middle finger with his right hand as he pitched against the Chicago Cubs on June 21, and only returned last month.

The Indians quickly got ahead to stay when Myles Straw started the game with a single, stole the second and scored on Amed Rosario’s single. It was 6-0 after Chang’s ninth home run, a two-point shot in the fifth from reliever Mike Foltynewicz.

A LITTLE QUICK HISTORY

Shoeless Joe Jackson was among the starting lineup for the opening of the 1915 season when Cleveland first played as the Indians. The franchise’s first season was 1901 as the Blues, then the Broncos in 1902 and the Naps in 1903-14. … Hall of Fame shortstop Lou Boudreau played the most matches in Indian uniform, 1,560 from 1938 to 1950. There are two players in franchise history who have played over games overall, but Terry Turner played all but 342 of his 1,619 games prior to 1915. Hall of Fame member Nap Lajoie played all 1,614 of his games from 1902 to 1914.

TRAINERS ‘ROOM

Rangers: RHP Matt Bush was activated from the 60-day injured list after not pitching for Texas since April 7 due to inflammation in his right elbow. The 35-year-old pulled one off with a perfect sixth.
