Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), warns of another possible spike in COVID-19 infections in the United States as the number of new cases has peaked at yet another rate too high for health officials.
Cases in the United States continue to fluctuate around 60,000 to 70,000 per day after a sharp drop in cases in recent weeks following the record wave of vacations. Daily coronavirus deaths hover around the 2,000 mark.

Public health officials fear that the slowing of the decline, the spread of new variants and the easing of restrictions by states could cause another surge.
Fauci pointed out that after the first wave in the spring, cases peaked and then stabilized around 20,000 before a second wave hit in July, peaking at around 70,000. Cases then leveled off at around 20,000. around 40,000 before the United States began recording hundreds of thousands of new cases per day during the winter.
“The problem is we are starting to level off. This plateau is around 60,000 to 70,000 cases per day. When you have that much viral activity on a plateau, it almost invariably means you’re at risk of having another spike. ” Fauci said during a White House briefing on COVID-19 on Friday.
“Many countries in Europe have seen exactly that. They had a decrease in cases over a six week period. They have reached a plateau. And now, over the last week, they’ve seen a 9% increase in cases, which we desperately want to avoid, ”he said.
Fauci’s warning comes as several states have started to roll back restrictions to curb the spread of the virus despite recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) not to do so. Texas and Mississippi announced this week that they are removing mask warrants and allowing companies to reopen at 100% capacity.
CDC director Rochelle Walensky said on Friday the number of cases and deaths in the United States was still too high and urged Americans to double prevention measures.
“I know the idea of wearing a relaxing mask and going back to your daily activities is appealing, but we’re not there yet. And we’ve been – we’ve seen this movie before: when prevention measures like mask warrants are canceled, cases increase, ”Walenksy said friday.
The warnings come as the United States has had some promising news on the vaccine front. The Biden administration announced this week that it will have enough vaccines to vaccinate all U.S. adults against the coronavirus by May, earlier than the administration’s previous estimate of securing doses by July.
Johnson & Johnson’s single-injection vaccine also received emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
According to the CDC, more than 82 million doses have been administered across the country so far.
