Special to the OBSERVER

Across the county and in local communities, there is still a shortage of food in local pantries. For this reason, the community of Fredonia will endeavor to restock the shelves of the Fredonia Food Pantry at the rural ministry of Chautauqua. This will be done as part of the annual Feeding Fredonia Challenge, which runs until October 22.

The food drive was unanimously approved by the board of directors of the village of Fredonia. Donations will be collected by different organizations and businesses within the village and can also be dropped off at the Presbyterian Church in Fredonia at any time. In addition to food donations, monetary donations can also be sent to the Fredonia Food Pantry at the church at 219 Central Ave. at Fredonia.

This challenge marks the eighth year of the Feeding Fredonia Challenge. Over the past seven years, churches, businesses, offices, the central school in Fredonia and SUNY Fredonia have all worked together to collect food for the neighborhood they are in. The volunteers helping at the Fredonia Food Pantry can’t wait to see the shelves full again.

Last year, the group reported over a ton and a half of donated food.

“The results have been exceptional. Besides the many monetary donations, the virtual food drive brought in over a ton and a half of food – 3,503 pounds to be exact! “ the organizers reported.
