FAIRMONT – Homecoming. A time to welcome former students and reflect on the shared values and culture of a common institution. This year, Fairmont High School is once again welcoming all alumni of the FHS group to perform the school song at halftime during the return game on Friday, September 24th.
Alumni will join current students in the Grades 9-12 group. Kate Kallenbach, a high school orchestra teacher, said she thinks coming home is a good time to get everyone together, especially since the rallies haven’t been happening for some time.
“The pandemic has been so hard on the performing arts and the arts in general. We had one last performance last year, the senior showcase, so there were only the seniors from the group, the choir and the orchestra. It gives us the opportunity to play outside in a safe and healthy way ”, Kallenbach said.
The school district posted the notice on its social media pages last Friday and Kallenbach said she started receiving messages and emails from interested people the same day.
“It exploded a bit” said Kallenbach.
She said the event will feature flags, guns and batons, so anyone with experience in these areas is welcome.
“We also invited those who moved to Fairmont and who may have been in a group in another district. If they see themselves as cardinals now, we would like them to join us ”, Kallenbach said.
She cited a few examples of teachers and administrators at Fairmont Area schools.
“Kathleen Walker didn’t graduate from here, but she’s a fabulous trumpeter. Molly Bleess does it, as does Katie and Andrew Hoaglund. We have old alumni who will relearn their instruments and parts like Alex Schmidt ”, Kallenbach said.
She said Todd Segar and his wife, Naomi, who graduated in 1989 with Kallenbach, will be among them. Former flag flyers Jeanne Garbers and Emily Labes are also in the game.
Kallenbach said she continues to hear from people interested in getting involved. She has heard from someone in the class of 1970 who is planning to be there.
“Every day I ask my students to raise their hands if they have anyone to join us for the ride home and more and more hands are raised every time I ask” Kallenbach said.
She is excited about the number of people who have reached out so far, but is hopeful that more people will show up at the event.
“I would like to have more people on the pitch than in the stands” Kallenbach admitted.
She said they could all play the school song together, receive a thunderous applause, then head to the east entrance to the field and create a tunnel for the Cardinal football field.
“We traditionally do this, but it would be really cool to double our numbers and see our alumni join us.” Kallenbach said.

“I’ll be happy to install anyone with music and if they don’t have an instrument I’ll do my best to find something for them.” Kallenbach said.
