FINAL: MSU Football roll Youngstown State 42-14

This Michigan state team has an affinity for early fireworks.

For the second week in a row, the Spartans scored on the game’s opener, this time on a 75-yard bomb from Payton Thorne To Jayden roseau, causing Spartan Stadium supporters to erupt for the first time in more than 600 days.

After the first score, Michigan State quickly forced a punt and walked around the field more methodically, but with the same result. Thorne kept the ball on a read option and rushed into the end zone to take the lead to 14 midway through the first quarter.

The defense continued to stifle Youngstown State’s offense in the first half, not allowing quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw or running back Jaleel McLaughlin to generate momentum or big plays. Xavier Henderson led the unit again with five tackles, one sack and a breathtaking first-half interception.

On the other side of the ball, the offense continued to roll. Thorne joined Reed again two minutes into the second quarter on a deep post for an 85-yard touchdown to take the lead to 21.

MSU scored two more touchdowns in the first half, both coming from the running backs. Elijah Collins saw his first action of the season pass Thorne 20 yards before suffering a quick injury. Walker added a late touchdown to take MSU 28’s lead with 17 seconds left to halftime.

The defense couldn’t keep the shutout going into the half, allowing Crenshaw to rush for a touchdown with 4 minutes left in the half to bring the score to 28-7 MSU before Walker scored for reduce the lead to 28 at half-time.

Michigan State eased off after halftime, scoring just seven points in the second half. The coaching staff pivoted the players deep on the depth-in-play board throughout the half and allowed the starters to rest.

After the teams traded touchdowns to start the 3rd quarter to bring the score to 42-14, the defenses gained the upper hand and the game’s final score was 42-14. Michigan State’s second offensive unit, led by quarterback Anthony Russo, couldn’t add points despite the efficient movement of the ball.

The rash allowed the young men to make an impression on fans and coaching staff with live reps. Men like wide receiver Keon Coleman, defensive linemen Kyle King and Derrick Harmon, cornerback Charles Brantley and many others got their first playing time in the green and white.

Thorne had 5 touchdowns, a career-high, and Jordon Simmons rushed for a career-high 142 yards, giving Walker a much-needed rest. Henderson – Mr. Reliable for the Spartans’ defense, finished with eight tackles, one sack and one interception to lead the unit.

Michigan State goes 2-0 on the season after the convincing victory. They’ll look to build on their momentum in Florida next week when they face the Miami Hurricanes on the road.
