First Influenza Influenza Death in Northeastern Ohio

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Department of Public Health reports the first pediatric death associated with influenza in northeastern Ohio.

A 13-year-old girl has died of the disease. This is the second young man who died in Ohio. A 3-year-old boy from Highland County, southwest Ohio, also died from the flu.

So far this season, 246 influenza-related hospitalizations have been reported in the city of Cleveland and 11 flu-related deaths.

In a statement issued by the Cuyahoga Department of Health, influenza activity generally begins to increase in October and can last until May, with cases generally reaching a peak between December and February.

Symptoms of flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.
