The first person died after being hospitalized with an unknown lung disease, linked to a vaping. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 193 people were affected with similar symptoms between June 28 and today.
The pain was particularly acute in Illinois, where the number of hospitalized electronic cigarette users for pulmonary symptoms doubled during the last week. At present, 22 people have been hospitalized; 12 other cases are under examination.
It is not yet clear whether the symptoms associated with hospitalizations come from a single disease. In Illinois, hospitalized people are relatively young: between 17 and 38 years old. Symptoms include shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, according to the CDC. Some patients reported having chest pain before being admitted to hospital. Others had vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue.
The cause is unknown, although CDC officials say that it is unlikely that a virus or bacteria is causing it. Nobody has yet identified any product that could make you sick.
