The COVID-19 outbreaks over the past month have been linked to five daycares, according to the Cayuga County Health Department.

The health department found the outbreaks started when a child or employee with symptoms of COVID-19 visited daycare. Due to the epidemics, daycares had to close specific classrooms or the entire facility.

“It affected the health and well-being of several families for at least 10 days if not more,” the department said on Saturday.

Cayuga County health officials have advised residents to stay home if they experience symptoms of COVID-19, such as cough, sore throat, fever, runny nose, congestion nasal or shortness of breath. They also urged parents not to send their children to daycare, school or camps if they are showing symptoms.

The health department recently reported that children were among the new cases of COVID-19 in the county. While older children ages 12 to 17 are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, none of the three vaccines approved by federal regulators are available for children under 12.
