Syracuse, NY – Onondaga County reported five more Covid-19 deaths today, including a man in his late 20s. It is only the fourth county resident under the age of 30 to die from the disease.

Today’s deaths included three women in their 50s and 60s, County Director Ryan McMahon said. All those who died had ‘serious conditions’, McMahon noted on Twitter. The fifth death was a resident of a nursing home, and no demographic or medical information was available.

This is the second time in two weeks that the county has reported five deaths in a single day. This brings the total number of deaths so far in October to 15 and 776 since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.

McMahon reported 331 new cases of respiratory illness. This is the highest daily number since September 25, and only the third time since January, the county has confirmed more than 300 cases in one day.

Those 331 cases represented about 5% of the 6,381 tests administered, McMahon said.

McMahon said the county had confirmed 868 cases since Monday, up from 834 cases during the same period last week.

“The next few days will say a lot,” he wrote.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospital fell from 86 to 80. Fewer patients were in intensive care today as well, from 22 Wednesday to 20 today.
