Here are five things to know about the new Met Francisco Lindor:
It’s a first
In 2016, Lindor became the first Puerto Rican shortstop in MLB history to win the Gold Glove Award. Lindor, who was born in Caguas, PR, and moved to Florida with his family when he was 12, also won a Golden Glove with Cleveland in 2019.
He likes to visit his alma mater
Lindor graduated in 2011 from Montverde Academy in Florida, which later named the baseball field in his honor. He attends school, works with the team and runs clinics.
He has a catchy nickname
Lindor goes by the nickname “Mr. Smile ”, which he wore on the back of his jersey during the first Players Weekend in 2017. Lindor also responds to“ Paquito ”, which is Spanish for Francisco.
He’s tested in the playoffs
In his career 95 batting in the playoffs, Lindor has made five homers. That includes a grand slam against the Yankees in the 2017 ALDS. He became only the third shortstop in major league history to hit a grand slam in the playoffs. Lindor has a .263 / .327 / .463 slash in 25 career playoff games. He reached the World Series with the Indians in 2016.
Last season was his worst
In 60 games, Lindor produced a .750 OPS, leading the American League in home plate appearances with 266. In the previous four seasons, he was an All-Star selection. A change hitter, Lindor won two AL Silver Sluggers as the top offensive shortstop.
