A flight carrying around 75 unaccompanied people Afghan children who fled the country during the American withdrawal arrived in Chicago Wednesday, according to city officials and local media.
The Homeland Security Ministry confirmed the arrival of the flight from Qatar, where many Afghan refugees were held before their resettlement, on Chicago Sun-Times reported.
A city of Chicago official said about 75 unaccompanied minors were on board the flight. A spokesperson for Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot said city officials would work to “ensure the well-being of these children.”
“Chicago will always be a welcoming home for the displaced and we will work with our state and federal partners to ensure we support the Afghan minors who arrived this morning,” the spokesperson said.
Unaccompanied children will either be placed in the care of a controlled parent or remain with the Office of Refugee Resettlement until they can be resettled, a DHS spokesperson told The Sun-Times.
Federal authorities are relocating thousands of Afghan refugees who were evacuated before the United States’ final withdrawal from the country in late September. Earlier this month, Secretary of State Tony Blinken visited Ramstein Air Base in Germany to meet unaccompanied Afghan children staying at the facility.
