TAMPA, Florida (AP / WSVN) – A Florida man is being treated for a flesh-eating bacteria he contracted while fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mike Walton told Fox 13 that he was trapped by a hook while fishing at about 30 kilometers off the coast of Palm Harbor on Saturday. He then went to the hospital where he received antibiotics for his hand, which had begun to swell.

"I had been hanging my hand in the afternoons without thinking about it," Walton said. "It was amazing how fast it was spreading."

Walton says that on Easter Sunday, black bubbles formed on his injured hand. He was transported to the Tampa General Hospital where doctors specialized in infectious diseases began to treat him.

He added that the doctors had considered amputating his arm, but had managed to eliminate the bacteria.

"When I woke up and [saw] my hand still tied, I was happy, "he said.

Walton said he should be released from the hospital on Thursday and take antibiotics for a month.
