Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said today that “it’s clear” the state is in the midst of its second wave of Covid-19.
He said the state is currently seeing a seven-day average of 1,300 cases per day. Hospitalizations are also trending upward, but not to the August peak level, he said.
Dr Thomas Dobbs, of the state’s health department, said today that there are no intensive care unit beds available in DeSoto County, which is in the southernmost part. state, and only one hospital in Jackson still has intensive care beds.
Even as cases decline, hospitalizations will continue to rise, Reeves said. He said the state must continue to act.
Reeves announced that more counties statewide are qualifying for additional measures, including a mask warrant. It adds 19 more counties to the state’s mask mandate. This means that half of the counties in the state under the additional restrictions.
While four of the original counties currently do not meet the criteria to remain under the restrictions, Reeves said the data shows there is a small margin and he has made the decision to keep the restrictions in place for a while. an additional week.
“For sure, the social gatherings in and around Halloween helped what we are in today,” Reeves said. He said that’s when this second wave really started.
What the numbers look like: The state is now reporting 665 new cases, but Dobbs said reports from some electronic labs have yet to be fully updated and the numbers will rise. The total number of cases in Mississippi is now 144,544.
Mississippi now has a total of 3,729 deaths, with 54 new deaths reported today. Dobbs said, as a prospect, there were 18% more deaths in the state this year than a normal year.
