A Florida wildlife park with more than 2,000 alligators and crocodiles has assured the public that reptiles, potentially deadly, would not escape during Hurricane Dorian.
Mark McHugh, CEO of Gatorland in Orlando, said in a video posted on Facebook this weekend that the park was preparing for the arrival of the storm by moving more than 100 birds and mammals, including flamingos, bobcats, panthers and deer, inside protected buildings.
McHugh said they would take care of themselves.

"Well, my friends, they've been here for 70 million years, it's not their first rodeo with a violent storm," he said while reporting that nearly two dozen reptiles Sharp teeth were resting in the water behind him.
He explained how the reptiles would feel the change in barometric pressure and plunge to the bottom of the ponds. Well immersed in the sea, they sat out of the storm and came to the surface only to get out their nostrils and take a "breath from time to time".

Dorian is not the first hurricane to threaten the release of captive animals in Florida.

Despite this, McHugh has promised that Gatorland's animals "would be safe" thanks to staff members considering overcoming the storm at the park. Staff members will sweep the area once the winds are below the tropical force to ensure that no areas have been breached, he said.
