MANASOTA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – Leann Thibodeau never thought it would happen to her. After all, she went to the beach a million times. She describes it as her favorite place in the world.

A week before the July 4th holiday, the Port Charlotte woman decided to try a new spot. She went to Manasota Beach for the first time, south of Venice. She was excited about spending time in the water.

She says do not think of a small cut at the foot, the size of a pinhole. In fact, she had already healed and was healing when she entered the water.

That's all it took.

It was Saturday. On Tuesday, his foot was red and infected. She even joked with friends that she must have a flesh-eating bacteria, never thinking that it could be true.

On Thursday, July 4, her foot was so swollen and so painful that she could not walk on it. Leann had to go to the hospital and was shocked by the diagnosis of Bayfront Health Port Charlotte doctors.

She says that they told her that she had flesh-eating bacteria, also known as necrotizing fasciitis. Leann was told that she needed an immediate surgery to get a part of her left foot removed.

She says that she asked the nurse the cause of this and was told that it was "group A streptococcus".

She stays in the hospital and told WFLA-News Channel 8: "I'm with my family and, still at the hospital, I barely have time to breathe. Thank you for your patience. [There’s been] progress made during the last 3 days after the surgery. My mother comes to visit me in 15 minutes. "

She issued the following warning, in part, on her Facebook page.

"Pay attention to my friends, I had a crust on my foot, I did not think at all. IT HAS BECOME INFECTED AND RAISED, I FIGHT AGAINST THREE DAYS, YOU SHOULD NOT FIRE. That is why, while this is said, I want to warn all my friends from SARASOTA to PORT CHARLOTTE, be careful. "
