Researchers at the University of Queensland said they are studying the possibility of using maggots and other "alternative proteins" in various "specialty foods", including sausages.

"An overcrowded world will struggle to find enough protein, unless people want to open their minds and stomachs to a much broader notion of food," said Dr. Louwrens Hoffman, professor of meat science at the University of Queensland. .

Sausages would be an ideal delivery mode for maggots, Hoffman said, as Western consumers would not eat insects unless they were "transformed and disguised".

The researchers found that broilers could also receive 15% "meal of larvae" without compromising their taste.

"It's quite logical if you think about it," said Hoffman, explaining that wild chickens already eat insects and larvae.
