Ford driver flips finger to camera grabbing possible Mustang Mule AWD

This particular Ford Mustang leaves us with some interesting questions. For starters, it looks like a typical S550, albeit with an intriguing array of outer bits. The chin, sills, and wheels appear to be from the Mach 1. The front fairing is not Mach 1, however, and there is no fender at the rear. The reason for the camouflage on the front clip is also a mystery, and then we have the words “no brakes” written on the driver’s side window. Weird.

Are you ready for things to get weirder? Our sources on these spy photos are rather convinced that this is a powertrain test mule, specifically for all-wheel drive. There is some evidence to back this claim – a close examination of the rear wheel reveals a dual caliper setup you don’t find on normal Mustangs. However, you’ll find a similar arrangement on other all-wheel-drive models like the Dodge Charger. The janky wire harness running in the rear wheel well is easy to see, but less noticeable is another bundle of wires going through the front well.

If Ford were to work on an all-wheel drive setup, four-wheel monitoring would be a no-brainer. By the way, incorporating some kind of torque vector or yaw system also fits the theory, and if it is related to the brake system, it is quite possible that the brakes are non-functional at different test periods. Hoping that the brakes on this car actually work, as these photos are from Public streets near Ford’s Dearborn test track. Perhaps that is why the driver of this Mustang was not happy to be photographed.

What does that mean? It could be something as simple as Ford testing new brake systems for the Mustang. It could also test an all-wheel-drive system, and it’s not like we haven’t heard all kinds of rumors about it. On a large scale, it could even be a test mule for a next-generation all-wheel-drive Mustang V8 hybrid. All of these things are planned for Mustang’s future, although we likely won’t see a debut until at least 2022, when the next-gen model is expected to arrive.
