Ford V Ferrari was a cinematic blockbuster that told the abridged story of how an American automaker fought against Ferrari in Europe and emerged victorious. Starring big names like Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the automotive star of the show is the Ford GT40, the race car that helped Ford achieve four Le Mans victories in the 1960s. Obviously, production had need a few stunt cars to shoot the movie, and now one of those GT40 replicas will be sold at the upcoming Mecum auctions in Dallas in September.
As reported by Silodrome, the car in question played the role of Dan Gurney’s GT40 bearing the number 3 and was used on the Le Mans racing scene. The car was then redesigned to play the role of the number 88 car driven by William Wonder at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The stunt cars in the film were built by Race Car Replicas in Michigan and faithfully recreate the specifications of the 1966 GT40. Of six GT40 stunt cars built for production, this is the only one to have obtained a VIN and also a title. So, yes, if you were wondering, you could theoretically register this GT40 and use it for shopping.
The car looks resplendent in red, especially in combination with the vintage gold wheels. The rims are wrapped in those glorious 295 / 50R15 tires with deliciously fat sidewalls, giving the car that vintage look that is so completely different from today’s performance cars. It would feature a 5.7-liter V8 paired with a 6-speed transaxle under the tailgate, although details are scarce and no photos are available showing the powertrain. Interestingly, the steering wheel is on the right side, but the shift lever is placed to the right of the driver, as is typically seen in a left-hand drive car. This should make it less difficult for those familiar with LHD cars to get comfortable.
As a stunt car, it’s unclear whether any of the big names on screen got behind the wheel of this car, and none are mentioned in the auction. Typically, film productions will have specially designated “cameras” which are the prettiest and most visually perfect for shooting scenes with actors. Stunt cars are designed to handle all the real driving actions as you would expect. This allows the production to move forward more quickly, as it is not necessary to repair the cosmetic damage suffered during the stunt driving to continue filming scenes with the actors.
