MILWAUKEE – There were about 10 minutes left until the trade deadline and Kris Bryant was confused.
“Heard rumblings, but it’s like, man, after three years of answering all the questions about being traded and all, and I’m not gonna be the one traded?” How did it work? He said on Friday afternoon.
It was his wife, Jessica, who first broke the news to him. And just as he spoke to her, Giants general manager Scott Harris called him.
In this viral video you saw, he was talking to Cubs president Jed Hoyer, but he already knew he was headed for San Francisco. It was Anthony Iapoce, the Cubs hitting coach, who made him cry.
“He’s crying, like ‘Everybody’s going away,’” Bryant said. “It got to me.”
Five games in Bryant’s second life as a professional baseball player, he only smiles. The weight is on his shoulders. After years of rumors, it finally happened. And it has worked really well for him so far. The first-place Giants have won four of five games since showing up to San Francisco. He had a homerun in his debut and he led the Giants to a wild victory to close their series in Arizona.
Bryant said he hasn’t communicated with Anthony Rizzo and Javy Báez about how they all pulled off their first few games, but yes he thought it was cool and he understands how fans saw it.
“What a coincidence that all of this is happening and pouring salt on an injury, of sorts,” he said.
