I can just imagine a group of Saturday Night Live writers sitting around after the launch of the iPhone X. "Hey guys," said one of them, "How can we make fun of Face ID?"
" I know!" says another, "Let's do 'Hand ID', we'll say that the phone can read your palm like a medium."
"That sounds good!" said a third. "I'm going to run a laughter track."
And from there, the brainstorming skit evolves into more and more stupid body parts, you can get a smartphone with "ID".
LG is doing it, though. On the LG G8 ThinQ, you can put your hand in front of the camera before and she will identify you. by the veins in your hand. "ID of the hand," says LG's slogan, "Your hand is the password."
The LG G8 has the usual slotted smartphone design. In addition to a front camera, the notch contains a flight time sensor (ToF), which allows a bit of 3D detection. LG has set up a face unlocking system with this sensor, of course, but you can also raise your hand in front of the phone, move it slightly, and the G8 will perform biometric operations in its own right.
"LG's Hand ID identifies owners by recognizing the shape, thickness and other individual characteristics of the veins of the palms of the hands." LG's press release reads "Simply place a prerecorded hand in front of the front camera for a fraction of a second to unlock the LG G8 ThinQ and all its contents."
In addition to reading at the palm of your hand, you can also perform some basic gestures on the sensors to control the current application. You can answer incoming calls, reject or stop them, stop an alarm, stop a stopwatch, take a selfie, control the multimedia content or open a favorite application. Most of these functions can normally be performed with a single tap on the touch screen, so I'm not sure that replacing them with a hand gesture is worth it. I'm not sure either a normal human wants to stick his hand to the camera of a smartphone to unlock it. Maybe it would work on a table?
Other great G8 features include a Google Sidebar button for several new phones from LG and Nokia. The screen also serves as a speaker, eliminating the need for a bottom-trigger speaker. Apart from that, the LG G8 looks like the LG G7, which has itself added a notch to the design of the LG G6. It does not seem that LG has invested much in smartphones lately.
For specifications, we have a 6.120-inch 3120 × 1440 OLED, a Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage, a 3500mAh battery, three rear cameras, a front camera, a USB-C port , a headphone jack, IP68 water resistance and a MicroSD card. If you wonder why LG has announced the LG G8 and the LG V50 this week, while its phones are usually released six months apart, the answer is probably related to the 5G. The V50 has 5G and the G8 does not, and 5G is big, hungry for power and expensive. LG is not talking about price today, but the V50 will probably be much more expensive than the G8 thanks to the 5G configuration.
It is not yet known if the LG G8 will provide a horoscope after reading the palm of the hand.
