Forget the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X, the Motorola Razr is the foldable phone to beat

Last month, an epidemic of collapsible phones swept through the MWC 2019 show in Barcelona. Samsung had a falling moment and launched the Galaxy Fold just a few days before the start of the conference. Huawei said "Keep my beer" and announced the Mate X. Then, TCL (the company that makes phones under the names Alcatel and BlackBerry Mobile) has teased several folding phone concepts and let's not forget the Nubia Alphaeither a folding phone that is a watch … or a watch that is a phone.

During all this period of bidding, Motorola remained silently away. But this is not completely removed from the hubbub – the rumors have whirled that he plans to release a foldable phone. The company confirmed that it works on a foldable phone and it will come out this summer, but nothing indicates if it is indeed a new Razr.

A refurbished Razr has the potential to be better than any other folding phone that comes out of it. After all, before smartphones are a thing, the Razr ruled the industry with its stylish and elegant flip phone design which could well translate into the emerging era of foldable phone.

Motorola Razr patent shows classic design with foldable display

In January, the Wall Street Journal announced that Motorola was revitalizing its Razr brand with a new $ 1,500 device. Later, a patent filing discovered by 91Mobiles included illustrations of what could be a new Razr phone.

The illustrations suggest a design similar to that of the original, but instead of dividing the interior space by a hinge separating the screen and the numeric keypad, the "new" Razr would be fully displayed. The screen would apparently be flexible enough to fold in half and the curved bulge of the screen (when closed) would be hidden inside the body of the phone.

If these annotations are correct, Motorola takes a more practical approach than Samsung and Huawei. Instead of a phone opening on a tablet, the small size of the Razr would still mean that there is still a pocket.

On Tuesday, the enthusiastic site XDA Developers presented what would have been the specifications of the Razr:

• Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 710
• RAM: 4 or 6 GB
• Storage: 64 or 128 GB
• Battery: 2,730 mAh
• Colors: White, Black or Gold

The display on the original Razr was only 2.2 inches. A 6.2-inch screen bodes well for people who prefer small phone cases with the largest screen possible The processor is a curious choice. Instead of a Snapdragon 855, he uses a Snapdragon 710, which is found in phones such as the Galaxy A8 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. It will be interesting to see how Motorola optimizes things for the processor.

Like the original Razr, there are also rumors of a second display on the outer shell. This could offer a few more features with some Motorola applications such as Moto Display, Moto Camera and Moto Actions.

New leaks show useful Razr software features

Last Thursday, XDA developers shared some of the so-called Razr software features. One of them is the ability to use the outside screen as a trackpad when it is unfolded. This is similar to the One Button Nav that we find on some Motorola phones like the Moto G5 Plus, which uses the fingerprint reader as a mini trackpad instead of the screen itself.

Rumors also claim that Google Assistant will be an important part of the device and that there will be a feature to activate it when the phone closes.

In recent years, Motorola has gained an excellent reputation regarding the use of the Android operating system on its phones. The software is close to the stock, with the exception of a handful of shortcuts added by Motorola.

Since the Razr is not a "phone that turns into a tablet", it avoids the software chaos that the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X have to face in order to make their devices user-friendly. If Motorola shipped the Razr only with Android 9 Pie and some add-ons, it should receive a warm welcome.

The Razr would be the "cheapest" foldable

When Motorola released the original Razr in 2004, the cost of the service was $ 450, which represents about $ 725 after adjustment for inflation. The new collapsible Razr could cost $ 1,500, according to the Wall Street Journal. It's more expensive than virtually any other phone sold today.

But compared to the Galaxy Fold, which costs $ 1,980, and the $ 2,600 you're supposed to pay for the Mate X, the Motorola Razr is a "bargain" for folding phones.

TCL announces intention to manufacture much cheaper folding products, and Huawei also said that he was working on some as well. But there is nothing definite for the moment.

Again, the Razr has a familiar name and design that can get people to open their wallets. Motorola will also limit manufacturing to about 200,000 units, according to the same report. This limited availability will likely encourage more people to try their luck over the phone.
