The former Alabama football assistant is not currently with his new team
During the Saban era, hardly anyone was by his side longer than Scott Cochran. Cochran was known for his energy as a strength and conditioning coach, and Alabama football had some of the strongest teams in college football history.
Cochran surprised many when he accepted a position with Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs as special teams coordinator. He stayed with Alabama football when Smart first visited Georgia, but he inevitably took on a coaching role on the pitch.
Reports now say he’s not currently on the squad after a year in his new role. In a statement, Smart said Cochran “takes the time to put his mental health and well-being first.”
Georgia had a strong performance in special teams under Cochran last year. Georgia blocked several kicks and had one of the top bettors in college football. Jake Camarda averaged 46.6 yards per punt.
Georgia also had a solid kicker to replace Rodrigo Blankenship. Jack Podlesny was perfect on extra points and made 13 of 16 field goal attempts.
In his absence, Alabama football still had a strong strength and conditioning program. David Ballou and Dr Matt Rhea were both hired to take over the program and they worked well together in Tuscaloosa. Alabama now uses a more focused approach to training and recovery, and each exercise has a specific goal in mind. It allows the Tide to achieve measured results without increasing the risk of injury from overworking an athlete.
The possibility of Cochran returning to Georgia is currently unknown. We can assume that it depends on its ability to regain health. Even though he is no longer an assistant under Nick Saban, the hope is that he can regain his sanity and make a full recovery.
