President of Notre-Dame University Rev. John I. Jenkins, SCC, congratulated Joe Donnelly, a former student of Notre-Dame, on his appointment today as United States Ambassador to the Holy See.
“Joe has been an exemplary official in Congress, an invaluable friend of Our Lady and of me personally, and he is an ideal choice to represent the United States in the Vatican,” said Father Jenkins. “He will bring to this role a deep understanding of the issues facing our nation and the world today, a true Catholic faith, and an understanding of the role the Church can play in our world. On behalf of the Notre Dame family, I offer my congratulations and prayers as he prepares for this new responsibility. “
Graduating from Notre Dame in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Donnelly received his law degree from the University four years later. He represented the 2nd Congressional District of Indiana, which includes Notre Dame, for three terms and served one term in the United States Senate.
As a professor of practice at Notre Dame from 2019 to 2021, Donnelly taught courses at the Keough School of Global Affairs on American politics, public policy and leadership. He has also practiced law for the past two years with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Field in Washington DC.
