Former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan announced Monday night when he heads to Notre-Dame as a graduate transfer. Coan, who did not play for the Badgers in 2020 after breaking his foot in preseason testing, will have one season of eligibility and is expected to compete to replace Ian Book as the Fighting Irish starting quarterback.
While Book could technically return for what would be his sixth season on the schedule, he’s generally expected to move on after securing his legacy this season. Book led Notre Dame to the college football playoffs and became the most successful quarterback of all time with a career 30-5 record.
This means Coan – or whoever wins the starting position next season – will have some great shoes to fill. But Coan has already guided a historically proud program to career success and appears to be a natural fit into Notre Dame’s balanced system. The 6-foot-3 Coan threw 2,727 yards, 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions while completing 69.6% of his passes while leading the Badgers to a 10-4 record and a Rose Bowl appearance in 2019.
He did not play for the Badgers in 2020 after breaking his foot in preseason practice. Redshirt rookie Graham Mertz became the Wisconsin starter in Coan’s absence and completed 61.1 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and five interceptions for the Badgers in a 4-3 season. Coan said in a statement Dec. 20 published by the Wisconsin program that he would quit school.
“Being in Wisconsin has been the experience of a life that I will cherish forever,” he writes. “Thank you to my teammates, coaches, athletic coaches and support staff who helped me during my time here. I have officially decided to enter the transfer portal. Although this decision was not easy, I know it is the right one for me and my family. Thanks for all of Wisconsin, I will love you forever!
Notre Dame and Wisconsin are set to face off in the 2021 season on September 25 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
