Fortnite could have been canceled, reveals former Epic boss at E3 2019

Epic's Fortnite is a massive global phenomenon that has reached a level of popularity that few people could have imagined. The free game did not even exist, but it was revealed this week at E3 2019.

Rod Fergusson, the former production manager at Epic Games, revealed that he wanted to cancel Fortnite when he was in the company. At the time, the project did not have its Royal Battle component (which contributed to the success of the game), and it faced some challenges.

"If I stayed at Epic, I would have canceled Fortnite, absolutely," Fergusson told Game Informer. "Before leaving, I was trying to cancel Fortnite. When it came to Save the World, it was a project that posed some problems. As director of production at the time, this game would not have exceeded my goal, but we should have continued. Carry on."

Fergusson did not specify what were the difficulties with Fortnite at the time. He left Epic in 2012 to join Irrational Games in order to close the development of BioShock Infinite. He then joined Microsoft when the company bought the Gears of War franchise at Epic. He now heads Gears Studio 5, The Coalition.

Fergusson said that he was not losing his sleep after leaving Epic before Fortnite exploded in popularity. "I'm really happy with their success," he said.

He again reminded people that Fortnite might not exist if he stayed at Epic. "This game you love, this world sensation, it would not exist if I had stayed at Epic," he said.

Fortnite's Battle Royale mode was released in September 2017, following the initial Save the World mode. It is at this moment that the game has really taken off.

Fergusson probably had no idea that Epic wanted to make Fortnite a royal battle game, as he left the company half a decade before the game's release.

By the way, BAFTA awarded Epic a special prize this week at E3 for its "impact on the global gaming industry".
