Competitive Fortnite fans are no strangers to Arten ‘BallaTW’ Esa – the voice of competitive Fortnite. Balla is a broadcaster, analyst, and widely regarded as one of the most trusted sources on the competitive side of the game.
During the FNCS Solos qualifiers, Balla tweeted that he would be, “Drop the biggest blog on why Solos shouldn’t be played for major events,” after the competition is over. When he did, he kept his promise.
The blog included over 4,000 words explaining why Solos is the worst game mode to feature for major events. He describes the multiple issues with Solo Fortnite from an audience and competitive perspective. Most of these issues aren’t as prevalent in larger team modes, as he states in his blog. We suggest anyone interested in the topic of Fortnite competition to read it (link in tweet, below).
Balla discusses some of the main problems with Solos in his blog: that the most popular players hardly ever win; that collusion, grief and the sharing of drops are commonplace; that the stories are superficial and difficult to develop; that the random elements of Fortnite affect this mode more than any other.
In the blog, Balla devotes a large section to toxicity in Solos. You may disagree with everything Balla said in his blog, but he’s dead in that department. Solos is the most toxic of all Fortnite modes. Competitive gamers are raging, ending their feeds, pitying each other and complaining endlessly on Twitter.
The solos bring everyone’s worst. It is the most raging game mode across the board. A lot of casual gamers even hate the mode. Anyone who follows competitive Fortnite knows that Fortnite Twitter is a cesspool at solo events. The pros rage, quit, and tell Epic how bad they are at their jobs. Here’s a tweet from Bizzle that Balla used in his blog, but this is just one of hundreds of similar tweets.
As Balla says, tweets like these are bad for everyone. Think of it like this: if a bunch of MMA fighters came out and said how the UFC isn’t competitive, not cool, and they’d never want to compete with the organization again – wouldn’t that hurt the product. ? Why would you watch anything when the most notable attendees of the event openly state how much they hate it, how chance dictates everything and how everyone cheats and gets along?
Again, we recommend that you read the entire blog. Balla talks about many other topics such as the need for a “main” competitive Fortnite mode, how to fix some of the issues with larger team modes and his idea of an “ideal tournament ecosystem”.
Fortunately, we already know that Season 4 will feature Threesomes as the FNCS game mode. This mode is a lot more fun to watch and – from what the pros tell us – a lot more fun to participate. Hopefully, Epic Games will take Balla’s advice for these solo events. We’ve come a long way since the World Cup, and it’s time for Fortnite’s competitive formats to evolve.
