Delhi riots case: TV channels released edited video, BJP IT cell chief tweeted, Umar told court

The lawyer for former JNU student Umar Khalid told a Delhi court that he was framed in the case of the UAPA riots in northeast Delhi by the press which released an edited video of his speech initially tweeted by BJP chief Amit Malviya.

Senior lawyer Trideep Pais, who appeared on behalf of Umar, addressed the arguments before Extra Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who adjourned the case for September 3. Pais began his arguments by telling the court that the police had registered a total of 715 FIRs and that Umar was “not named in a single FIR.” He told the court that the UAPA FIR is “unnecessary and has was drafted and filed to selectively target individuals based on opposition to the CAA. “Pais told the court that in each of the riot FIRs a recognizable offense was disclosed, however, in the current FIR , there is no such thing.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court granted on Monday two week delay to the Lieutenant Governor for filing a response to a petition requesting the operationalization of a high-level committee to examine the causes of death during the Covid pandemic. The Delhi government’s decision to set up the panel was suspended by LG Anil Baijal.

Lead lawyer Rahul Mehra, representing the Delhi government before the divisional bench of Judges Vipin Sanghi and Jasmeet Singh, had previously argued that the LG had not referred the case to the president and had mainly opposed the creation of the high-level committee on the grounds that the Supreme Court has already set up a sub-group committee.

Coming to the news related to Covid on Monday, the Delhi HC also granted six week deadline to the Center and the Delhi government to file responses to a plea requesting a CBI investigation into the death of 21 COVID-19[female[feminine patients at Jaipur Golden Hospital in April, allegedly due to lack of oxygen. The court, which heard the plea filed by the families of some patients who died between April 23 and 24, also allowed the applicants to file a reply to the governments’ responses.

On a meteorological level, Delhi-NCR should see cloudy sky, light rain and there is a possibility of thunderstorms on Tuesday, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. The maximum temperature is likely to be 36 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity at 8:30 am was 89% and the temperature at the same time was 29.8 degrees Celsius.

During this time, four people were killed and a minor was injured in Gurugram, police said, adding that the incident occurred in the Rajendra Park area late Monday evening and the accused was taken into custody. The victims were reportedly murdered with a sharp object.

Separately, a Delhi court on Monday arrested Delhi police for their investigation into the farmers’ protest and observed that it was conducted at the convenience of the authority rather than in accordance with the mandate of the law. Additional Sessions Judge Gagandeep Singh heard the early bail application filed by gangster-turned-activist Lakha Sidhana, who is accused of Republic Day violence at the Red Fort following the farmers’ rally. The case was adjourned until August 26.
