Twelve Russian intelligence agents were charged with hacking Democratic Party computers before the 2016 presidential election, the US Department of Justice announced on Friday.

These charges were sought by the prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is investigating a Russian interference in the November 2016 poll won by Republican candidate Donald Trump against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton

The announcement comes three days before a meeting between Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Helsinki, where the two leaders should discuss the allegations of Russian interference. Russia is accused of orchestrating computer hacking that has led to the theft and publication of thousands of Democratic leaders' emails, blurring the message of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

The accused, all members of the Russian Army Intelligence Service (GRU), are accused of "intentionally conspiring (…) to gain unauthorized access in the computers of US people or entities involved in the US presidential election, steal documents from these computers and arrange for the publication of these documents to interfere in the election ", according to the indictment.
