Spanish rescue services announced that they rescued more than 340 migrants in the Mediterranean on Saturday, including one attempting a crossing on a truck inner tube. The Spanish coastguard said it rescued 240 people on 12 boats: 10 in the Strait of Gibraltar and two in the Alboran Sea, separating Spain from Morocco. A spokesman added that the Civil Guard had rescued more than a hundred other migrants in the Mediterranean.
Some 17,000 migrants have arrived in Spain since the beginning of the year. According to a recent count of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 16,902 migrants have arrived in Spain since the beginning of the year, and 294 have died while trying to reach that country, out of a total of 1,400 deaths in Mediterranean this year
Spain has accepted 630 migrants last month. Last month, Spain agreed to welcome 630 migrants arriving on board three ships, including the Aquarius boat of a French NGO, refused by Italy and Malta. And on July 4, a boat from the Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms docked in Barcelona with 60 migrants who had arrived from Libya on board, after Italy refused to welcome them.
