The Italian government allowed these migrants to disembark after the commitment of five European Union countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Germany) to each receive 50 people.

The 450 migrants who were aboard two military ships in Italian waters all landed in Sicily, said Monday, July 16 the mayor of Pozzallo, the city where they were welcomed. "The terrible journey of migrants who had been on two ships for days against the port of Pozzallo ended in the night with their landing" added Roberto Ammatuma, quoted by the agency AGI. The Italian government has allowed these migrants to disembark after the commitment of five European Union countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Germany) to welcome 50 people each.

Italy has complained for years about the lack of solidarity of other EU countries in the management of the migration problem, considering that it has been abandoned in the face of the arrival of hundreds of thousands of refugees landing on its shores. Rome had tried Friday to convince Malta to take care of these 450 migrants, rescued aboard a wooden boat. Malta replied that the boat was much closer to the Italian island of Lampedusa than its own territory, pointing out that the migrants did not want Maltese aid but wanted to continue on their way to Italy.

The two military ships that rescued these refugees have remained near the Sicilian coast since Saturday morning, waiting for a final solution. The sick, women and children were allowed to disembark in several slices during the weekend. The Italian authorities finally allowed the men to go ashore late Sunday night.

"Today, for the first time, we can say that migrants have landed in Europe" commented with satisfaction the presidency of the Council of Ministers on Monday. "Migrants shall receive all necessary badistance while waiting to be distributed in the other European countries" who have accepted to receive them, added the Italian Government.
