The United States on Friday expressed "deep concern" after the dissolution of parliament in Sri Lanka "aggravates the political crisis".

"As a close partner of Sri Lanka, we believe that democratic institutions and processes must be respected to ensure stability and prosperity," the US State Department said in a tweet.

Indian Ocean island president Maithripala Sirisena on Friday closed parliament and called early elections after two weeks of political turmoil. His party had previously announced that it did not have a sufficient majority to confirm its contested candidate for the post of prime minister.

Since the surprise dismissal on October 26 by the head of government Ranil Wickremesinghe, and his replacement by the former strongman of this South Asian nation (2005-2015) Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lanka is found de facto with two rival prime ministers. Ranil Wickremesinghe denounces his dismissal as unconstitutional.

Before dissolving it, the president suspended Parliament, attracting criticism from the United States and the European Union asking him to reconsider this decision.
