Fish swim in hallways of hospital because of monsoon

This is one of the consequences of the monsoon in India. Flooding caused fish to swim in the corridors of a hospital in Bihar State (northeast) on Sunday, July 29.

While dirty water was flowing into the water Intensive care unit at Patna's Nalanda University Hospital, patients packed up as they could on their beds waiting for the flow to pbad. A relative of a patient even caught a fish.

Engending a pipe

«Part of the ground floor was flooded yesterday after the clogging of a pipe because of heavy rains, "said Monday the head of the hospital, Sitaram Prasad.

This misfortune illustrates the problems posed to the infrastructure of the country by the monsoon which sows every year death and destruction. From June to September, tens of thousands of buildings and homes are regularly flooded.

545 deaths since May

Since May, 545 people have died because of the rains. In Uttar Pradesh state of western Bihar alone, house or wall collapse has killed nearly 80 people since last Thursday, according to local emergency officer Sanjay Kumar.

The others States around were also on the alert. Authorities evacuated 3,000 residents from areas near Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges, which has exceeded its warning in New Delhi. The state of Haryana, Gujarat (west) and Assam (north-east) were also affected.
