He was one of the greatest French cartoon writers, author of popular series becoming "clbadics". Frank Giroud died on Friday, July 13 from a long illness
Born on May 3, 1956 in Toulouse, Frank Giroud fluttered for several years before finding his way. After studying history and a curriculum at the National School of Charters, he has a thousand jobs: animator, decorator of windows, teacher, bursar, director of recreation centers, graphic designer, tour guide … before turning to education
A thousand lives … in one
After his aggregation of history, he became a teacher in Milan and Grenoble but soon returned to his first love: writing and drawing . He first publishes short stories for Fleurus and Milan editions. Co-author of a formidable History of France in comics published by Larousse, he created, in 1982, the character of Louis la Guigne, with Jean-Paul Dethorey. This series of thirteen episodes tells the story of the unlucky Louis Ferchot (hence his nickname), a former soldier who tries to resume a normal life after a long detention in the prison of Cayenne, where he was sent for insubordination. This will be his first success.
Frank Giroud then abandons teaching to devote himself exclusively to writing. He becomes lyricist of the singer Juliette and collaborates regularly in several titles of the press for adults or teenagers ( Circus Lived Nitro Spirou Tintin ). In the two decades that followed, the screenwriter published several series, in parallel, Mandrill (with Barly Baruti), The Forgotten Annam and Azrayen (with Lax), to mention only a few.
A history buff
The consecration will come with The Decalogue in the early 2000s. In this series of ten episodes, Frank Giroud imagines the story of a sacred text, different from the Bible and the Koran, through the millennia, from its writing until today. The series (imaged by a dozen designers, including Giulio De Vita and Paul Gillon) offers different modes of reading. It is understood differently depending on whether one reads it in chronological order starting with the first album to the last or going back in time, beginning with volume 10!
Will follow several other projects: Secrets or Fates but also The Lawyer (designed by Volante) and The Veteran (by Mezzomo). Last July, Frank Giroud had just published Churchill and me drawn by Andréa Cucchi, at Casterman.
A recognized author
His work, crowned with many awards (he had obtained in 2002 the prestigious Max und Moritz best international screenwriter, succeeding Pierre Christin, Alan Moore and Jean Van Hamme), presents, beyond the diversity of graphic styles of his coauthors, a great unity. Frank Giroud adored history and politics and his intrigues teem with allusions to historical episodes.
Lover of Southern cultures, engaged in many badociative projects, this generous author was also at ease in writing from family sagas to polars or westerns. He has explored the most varied fields and provided scenarios to nearly fifty designers.
Travels
Great traveler, he has long lived in the Brazilian Amazon and surveyed Africa, Asia and much of the world. Europe, endowed with a tongue-in-cheek humor that had led him to write sketches for several comics, this man of great culture had recently begun writing plays. And even musicals. Despite the illness and the heavy treatment, he continued to work to the end, even going so far as to keep a diary drawn (and humorous) of his many hospital stays.
