A salary of 8,500 euros is not necessarily the only monthly income for many French MEPs. A survey conducted by Transparency International, published on Tuesday, reports that French elected officials appreciate so-called "ancillary" revenues, mainly from powerful lobbies. Each month, they receive the sum of 8,500 euros for their work done in the European Parliament, but some manage to double or even triple that amount.

Thus, between 2014 and 2018, slightly more than 4.8 million euros of "ancillary" revenues (the highest total of the European Parliament) were affected the French MEPs, an average of 120,000 euros for each parliamentarian. A record.

In proportion, the French elected representatives are among the most numerous MEPs to receive "ancillary" income (51%), just behind the Belgians (62%), the Austrians (56%) and the Danes ( 54%)

Muselier, Dati, Schaffhauser …

In detail, Renaud Muselier is the French MEP who receives the most additional income: he ranks 4th in the overall ranking. Thus, the president of the Paca region has won at least 816,130 euros over the 2014-2018 period. The elected Marseille, a doctor by training, derives his income from his activities in his two clinics.

Among the other names identified by the Transparency International survey, that of Rachida Dati (5th position). Over the period, the mayor of the seventh arrondissement of Paris declared a minimum of 768,000 euros of ancillary income. This amount comes from his law firm, while suspicions of conflicts of interest of the former minister of Nicolas Sarkozy with GDF-Suez had been issued, almost three years ago, by the magazine Cash Investigation. 19659006] Finally, within the ENF group founded by Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini, Jean-Luc Schaffhauser (8th position) receives a minimum income of 4430,022 euros from a Dubai-based company.

Transparency wants more than transparency

Beyond its quantified survey, Transparency International would like control over these "ancillary" revenues to be reinforced by the European Parliament. For greater transparency, the NGO makes four proposals: the ban on MEPs for lobbying activities in the margins of a mandate and the introduction of a waiting period for leavers; the obligation to provide more details on the nature of the activities retained; the improvement of the control exercised by the European Parliament and the establishment of an independent authority to punish abuses
