This summer, one of the big refuges of the SPA, that of Montpellier, opened its doors to the crews of this new documentary series. There are 260 refuges in France: this one, like the others, works so that the abandoned animals – nearly 100,000 per year in the Hexagon – are no longer without a collar.
Made with modesty, without "overdramatizing" already difficult situations, Without collar tears, smiles and sighs. The reception of abandoned and traumatized animals, the veterinary care, the work of devoted volunteers and the joy of the too few adoptions are the daily life of the refuge. "We just put our cameras trying to intervene as little as possible," says Lyes Boudechiche, producer at BBC Studios France. In the same way, the voice-over intervenes very little, because one wanted to place the televiewer in the position of witness. When we are not watered with comments, we make our own idea and it gives way to pure emotion. "
Adopt rather than buy
Jean-Luc Reichmann is the voice-over of these four episodes. A supporter of the animal cause, the animator found his labrador in a shelter. "Our primary desire," continues the producer, "has been to break the prejudices on the shelters. One imagines sick, unstable animals that have been abused. It can be scary to adopt an animal found in a shelter. But it is an accepted idea: there are all kinds of animals of all ages and all races. You have to go there rather than buying in a pet store or a breeding farm. I hope our series can, among other things, help people really think about it. "
