The University Hospital of Grenoble has successfully tested a device that can diagnose the flu in 20 minutes. An innovative system that helps to relieve emergencies during epidemics.
Every year, the epidemic peak flu imposes engorges the emergency services. At the CHU Grenoble, the emergency department has up to a third of additional patient arrivals during this period (200/210 in flu period against 150/160 entries usually). Consequence: the hospital laboratory has to deal with an influx of medical tests to perform.

To facilitate the diagnosis and clear the ERs, last winter Grenoble CHU tested the cobas® Liat® device from the Roche laboratory, a small-format automaton that allows molecular tests to be carried out directly within ER. Thanks to this delocalized mini-laboratory, the doctors obtained the results of the badyzes in 20 minutes, which allowed them to quickly determine which patients had to be hospitalized. This test was performed on 200 patients.
To date, this device can perform tests for influenza A, influenza B and RSV (the virus
respiratory syncytial, the most common cause bronchiolites). But tests are being developed for other infectious diseases.
