In a report published on July 27, the NGO Save the Children denounces the prostitution and exploitation of very young migrants who wish to cross the Franco-Italian border. The report, written in Italian, is the result of a survey conducted since early 2017. The figures are alarming: between January 2017 and March 2018, more than 1,900 girls were badually exploited. 160 of them were children.
Young migrants are mainly from sub-Saharan countries, mainly from Nigeria. The journey to Europe is long: cross Nigeria by minibus, on foot, or by motorbike before arriving in Niger. Cross the Sahara to reach Libya. Finally, to reach Italy by sea before walking towards the French border.
Some are kidnapped to become bad slaves
It is on the Franco-Italian border that certain migrant children are forced to prostitute themselves because they can not afford the smugglers (the sum is up to 150 euros). But not only. The road is long and the young migrants prostitute themselves for a little food, or a place to sleep. Blessing, Nigerian, tells in the report how, arrived in Libya, she was forced to prostitute during 8 months to "live properly".
Some migrants are also kidnapped to become true bad slaves
"I was kidnapped in Libya, I was not yet eighteen, but he abused me. forced me to declare myself of age and become his wife, where my farm started ", says Jennifer, from Benin
Indeed, the report mentions organized trafficking around migrants. Some extraordinary reception centers (CAS), where migrants are collected, are transformed into a recruiting center.
The phenomenon is not new and does not only affect children. Save the Children recalls that between 2010 and 2012, 30,146 migrants were victims of prostitution. Among them, more than 1,000 miners.
