From pioneers to young hopefuls
They are distinguished by a small orange square. The photographs selected for the exhibition "Parcours elles x Paris Photo" are discovered while strolling in the Grand Palais. About sixty exhibitors played the game. Publishers, galleries that present clichés signed by women. You can discover pioneer photos like Margaret Watkings (1884-1969). The Canadian is one of the first women photographers to work in advertising. The exhibition also takes us into the 1970s with feminists (Arlene Gottfried, Renate Bertlmann, Joan Lyons …). This exhibition also honors promising young photographers such as Lisa Sartorio, Wiame Haddad, Léa Bélooussovitch and Hilla Kurki.
An environment still misogynistic?
Even today, many women photographers live in the shadow of their male colleagues. Hence the idea of this exhibition.
The fact that we are still there in 2018 is unfortunate. In this journey, there is a desire to move things forward.
Fannie Escoulen, curator of the exhibition
And there is still a lot of work. Only 20% of the snapshots exhibited at Paris Photo were made by women.
